Things I’m Loving Right Now: Summer Flings Edition

As we’ve pointed out about 87000 times on this blog, we love summer!! I got really mad at Target the other day when I came upon the Back-to-School section already on full blast. Uugh. But hey, we’re only about halfway through, and no one has even made any Labor Day party plans yet. So! Let me tell you about a few totally random things that I’m loving right now, and may or may not continue to love them once the leaves start to turn…

Urban Decay Go Naked Perfume Oil

via Sephora.com

Did you know that Urban Decay came out with a limited edition perfume oil last month? They did, and I sleepily snatched it up the morning I got the email about it’s release (we all shop in bed now, right?), and I have no regrets. The main notes are citrus and lavender, and UD describes it as “the scent of sun-warmed skin and salt air”. Since I want to be at the beach at all times, I didn’t even think twice about buying this. It is a perfect light scent- it lingers but never overpowers. It is an oil with a roller ball applicator, which also makes it perfect to pop in your purse or travel bag. And it really does smell like sunshine! I may need to stockpile a few for next year.

Breakfast Smoothies

I realize this is far from a newsflash, but I do love the ease of a breakfast smoothie in the summer. When it’s hot, I don’t feel like cooking breakfast on the stove, or like, chewing… and some mornings I really am just in too much of a hurry to sit down with a meal, or too antsy to get outside for a walk to work on my tan and get some fresh air. Plus, I recently rediscovered that my blender has a handy smoothie-cup accessory.

Here’s my current go-to smoothie recipe:

  • 1 banana (frozen or with ice)
  • 1 scoop plain protein powder
  • 1 packet plain oatmeal
  • 12 grams PB2
  • 1 cup water (less if adding ice)
  • a big handful of spinach

I like this combo for a couple of reasons- I usually have the ingredients on hand, it gives me a good serving of carbs if I’m going to work or to the gym, I get a good hit of protein, and some micros from the spinach. Of course, most importantly, it is delicious and totally hits the spot! BTW you can totally use real peanut butter- I’m just all about the laziness of the powdered kind. I like the protein from Mike’s Mix because the ingredients are “100% whey protein concentrate”. That’s it. (They also have a vegan soy free version if you’re into that!) Bonus: it’s made in nearby Mazomanie, Wisconsin. Yay!

Express One Eleven V-neck London Tee

via express.com

Are you looking for a t-shirt that is lazy while still being cute? Un-fussy yet makes you look put together? Something that covers your butt but isn’t a sack? Something casually dressy that can work as dressed-up casual? Allow me to introduce you to the Express London Tee! Cute, breezy, chic… will they last forever? Probably not (my grey burnout one is kind of pilling after about a month but also I kind of like it that way??), but they are always (always!!) on sale and have fast become a staple in my summer wardrobe. I have about 4 or 5 of these now, and with leggings (the high-low hem really works with leggings!) and a pair of vans, this is my daytime uniform. With a pair of skinny jeans and booties, I’m ready for a night on the town.

Twin Peaks: The Return

To say that I am obsessed with this show is, by far, an understatement. I’m in deep, guys. Just look at my current podcast queue:

THIS SHOW YOU GUYS. I love it. I hate it. I love it. I can’t stop thinking about it. One minute I think David Lynch is trolling us (he probably is a little), the next, I’m sure it’s all genius. The pace is glacially slow sometimes, and I want to throw things at my TV, and then I realize that this is the only show that I just sit and watch, completely undivided. Not watch while scrolling Instagram, not watch while eating dinner… I am completely riveted. It’s brilliant. If you are going to watch it, at the risk of sounding pretentious, I will give you this advice: be prepared for awkward and weird (like really weird), don’t expect all nostalgia all the time, and remember that this is intended as an 18 hour movie, so if a plot thread doesn’t get mentioned for 6 episodes, that’s ok! Let this show wash over you, sleep on it, then dive down all of the Reddit threads to see what the internet nerds figured out while you sip a damn fine cup of coffee.

What are your summer flings? Are you watching Twin Peaks? Can we talk about it??????????
