Reviewing some random recent purchases–summer peach edition

The past few years I’ve been really into peach and orange hued makeup. I must not be alone–Too Faced has really gone all in on their Peach line–especially after the success of the Sweet Peach Eyeshadow Palette, which I like a lot.

There’s something about peach I find really fresh and and pulled together, casual. And orange feels unexpected and a little interesting. I also feel like they both give me me a more youthful look–at least that’s what I’m hoping!

The downside is that peach is a very soft color and orange just feels more relevant when it’s warm, so both tend to work best on me in the summer.

I’ve had my eye on some new launches–many of them in the peach or orange color story–and now that summer is here, I went ahead and picked up a few things to celebrate my favorite season.

And here are my initial thoughts:

Too Faced, Sweet Peach Creamy Lip Oil in Pure Peach and Papa Don’t Peach: I’ve been looking at these for a while. I really like lip oils, especially in the winter, but as I said early, peach feels really made for warm weather looks. That’s kinda the rub with these products. The formula is wonderful. Your lips feel amazing with it on and it has very good color payoff. It just doesn’t last. But it gives your lips a really juicy look without the tackiness or stickiness of a gloss. But be warned you will need to reapply often. So it’s really a perfect winter formula with a perfect summer color. I like the more neutral Papa Don’t Peach and in the end I’m sure I’ll get the most use out of it but I’m wearing Pure Peach constantly. I think they are kinda pricey at $19 considering they aren’t a long wearing product, but the quality is really good. I don’t think there’s a cheaper dupe out there with the same formula and color selection. If there is, let me know in the comments below. I was thinking of returning them because of the price and feeling more like a seasonal product, but I’m gonna hang on to them. I’ve been getting a lot of wear from them already and think of them as a summer staple already.

check my peach/orange polish situation. i told you, i’m in!

FENTY BEAUTY by Rihanna, Killawatt Foil Freestyle Highlighter Duo in Mimosa Sunrise/ Sangria Sunset: Speaking of pricey, this duo runs $36!!!! For two colors: metallic tangerine/ metallic magenta both of which probably don’t work for my skin tone. I was suckered into buying them because that Rihanna’s Vogue tutorial where she uses it and it looks incredible. But funny story, I look nothing like Rihanna. Weird, I know. But that hasn’t stopped me from trying to make this work, primarily the orange. I have looked through all of my makeup collection and I really just don’t have an orange that matches the intensity and brightness of this one. And I doubt there’s a dupe out there either. I have never used the purple side and I’ve used neither as a highlighter. Am I going to keep it? Ugh, I’m really torn. I really love the orange even though I’m not sure it looks  good on me, although pairing it with my UD, Torch eyeliner kinda mutes it. But do I $36 love it? I’m not sure.

FENTY BEAUTY by Rihanna,Cheek-Hugging Highlight Brush 120: Sticking with RiRi’s line, this brush is AMAZING!!! The shape is straight bonkers but it works like a dream. The issue? It’s $32 and it’s really designed for highlight, which I rarely wear. If you do–get this brush immediately!!!! But for me? I think I need to return it. I just haven’t used it much since I got it.

Kylie Cosmetics, Dazzle Velvet Lip Kit: So I work with someone OBSESSED with Kylie’s lip products. Like whoa. Recently, there was a sale on the lip kits where they were $14 instead of $27. So I said she could pick one for me. Damn. This color is perfection. It’s peachy but neutral and also looks very polished but also casual. The knock against Kylie’s lip products, aside from the cost, has been their drying formula. But this is a velvet product which means it doesn’t last as long, but it’s also not going to flake off your lips. I’m probably not gonna get a ton of use from the pencil it comes with but it’s nice, too. I just don’t use a liner a ton. I definitely wouldn’t pay $27 for this kit, but at $14–it’s a great deal and a really great color.

Wet n Wild, Perfect Pout Gel Lip Liner in Red the Scene: Speaking of lip liners, I will wear a liner when I’m putting on a red lip and on a recent work trip I realized I hadn’t packed one and I NEEDED a liner. So I stopped at Walgreens and grabbed this one for $2.99. You guys. It’s sooo good! I really love the color of it. It’s not too blue or too orange. I like it so much, I’ve worn it alone with a balm over it and it’s really a nice effect. I highly recommend it–it’s also self-sharpening–which is a major plus for me!

NYX Professional Makeup, Glazed & Confused Eye Gloss in Get Naked: I was weirdly excited for this one when I found it at Ulta. I really don’t like things in pots, but I love this kind of one stop shadow shop. And I love the wet look trend for eye makeup and this seemed like a cool way to try it out. Ugh. Don’t. At least not with this guy. It creases so bad it–it all migrates like a magnet into your crease and becomes a total mess. The only way it would work is to powder it in place and then what’s the point. At $9.99, it’s not a huge expense, but I’ll return it regardless.

Catrice, Prime & Fine Smoothing Refiner: I have a friend who is on the hunt for the perfect pore filling primer. She has tried a bunch and says none of them fix her focus off that one pore that drives her crazy. Watching a recent Tati video, she recommended this one as a dupe for her favorite, the Tarte, limited-edition timeless smoothing primer which I wasn’t familiar with either prior to her mentioning this as a dupe. I’ll be honest, I don’t really use primers like this. Not that I don’t need it. But it’s a step I’m not committed to adding to my routine. However, in keeping with the spirit of the blog and trying products so you don’t have to–I thought I’d check it out. My first impression is I like it way more than other pore fillers I’ve dabbled with like the classic Benefit, Porefessional or Smashbox, Photo Finish mostly because it’s a cream and doesn’t pill like those others do. Does it fill my pores? I wouldn’t go that far–but I definitely notice it gives my skin a filter effect. I’ve tried it putting it on before foundation and after it and it seems to work fine both ways. I also find it very easy to apply and you don’t need much. And for $6.99–I’d recommend trying it. And it seems like there are always sales with Catrice–although this is the only product from them I’ve ever tried.

IT Cosmetics, Bye Bye Pores Pressed Poreless Finishing Powder: I really like this powder and I’m not much of a powder girl. In fact, the NYX Professional Makeup HD Finishing Powder in Banana has been my holy grail powder for under eye but this one is definitely better. It’s more expensive: $29 vs $9.99, but I think it’s worth it. It really sets my concealer and doesn’t crease and gives a great finish. It’s definitely a keeper.

Colourpop, Ultra Matte Lip in Mama and Ultra Blotted Lip in Party Wave, Double Scoop, Out of Beach (discontinued): I’m so crazy for these–especially the blotted lip. It legit makes it look like you just had a Popsicle. They are perfect for summer. Talk about fresh–it’s the freshest pout you can get. And at $6.50 tops, they are totally worth it. I can’t recommend these enough.

Kat Von D, MetalMatte Mini Eyeshadow Palette: I keep forgetting to talk about this one, which is crazy, because I LOVE it!!! It’s the palette I use the most recently. I love the mix of mattes and metals and it’s very easy to do a complete eye look or just swipe one of the metals on your lid and call it a day. I think the colors are super special, pigmented and lasting, and the packaging makes it very easy to travel with–I’ve brought it a bunch of places with me. It’s $39 but I find it’s so worth it and I highly recommend it!

So there are some new things I’ve tried lately and my thoughts on them. I really need to make a decision on that Fenty duo soon. I’m super torn! Have you tried any of these items? Got anything new you’ve been loving? Any busts we should know about? Share them below!

Yup, I bought these things. Which is why I might need to return some things.
